Jajpur, May 14 (LocalWire): A Dalit bride refused to marry the groom on Monday night in Jajpur district after she found her would-be-husband was a drunkard.
The groom, Hadibandhu Sethi of Pradhanpanda village of Kendrapada district who is a cook by profession came to marry Sanghamitra Sethi of Baniamala village of Jajpur district on Monday night.
Both the bride and groom were sitting at the altar with priests reciting holy mantras when the bride smelt bad odour from the groom’s mouth.
She admonished Hadibandhu for coming to marry her in an inebriated state and left the altar calling off the marriage.
The parents of both the bride and the groom tried to convince her but she didn’t budge.
The bride is a member of a Self Help Group in the village and she along with other SHG members had forcefully closed down a liquor shop in the nearby village Namatara two years back.
Since two years, the SHG members have been leading anti-liquor stir and shut down many liquor shops in the area.
‘My blood boiled the moment I realised the groom was drunk and I decided not to marry a man who is drunk even ahead of his wedding which indicated he was not a responsible man and unfit for me,’ added Sanghamitra.
The villagers called a meeting and directed the father of the groom to return Rs 71,000, a gold chain and a gold ring which the bride’s father gave to Hadibandhu at the time of betrothal.
‘My parents and other relatives are worried about my marriage but I convinced them not to worry,’ said the girl.
Mili Jena, the local Sarapanch and some other women leaders on Tuesday met Sanghamitra and praised her.
