Berhampur, May 17 (LocalWire): Concerned over the rise of atrocities on Dalits in Ganjam district, two organisations threatened to launch an agitation demanding stringent action against the accused.
‘We will demonstrate in front of Sorada tehsil office on 20 May demanding immediate arrest of the accuseds involved in atrocities on Dalits,’ Bidyadhara Naik of Dalit-Adivasi Coordination Samiti (DACS) and Raghunath Naik of All India Kissan Mazdoor Sabha (AIKMS) said here.
Leaders of the organizations, allegedly belonging to the upper caste had 17.05.2019 attacked Dalits at S.Gunduribadi under Sorada police station on 24 April.
Several people belonging to scheduled caste were injured when their wedding procession was stone-pelted at.
‘The marriage reception of a Dalit and food worth lakhs was spoilt due to the incident,’ they alleged.
Before the incident, the accused had also imposed a fine on a Dalit youth as he entered the village temple, DACS
Similarly on 3 March, a 60-year-old man was killed by the upper caste people and his body dumped in a well at Kamagada under Aska police station limits.
The deceased was identified as Subash Nayak, father of Santosh Nayak, a leader of Dalit community in the area, they said. ‘We had complained to the police about the murder but police did not take any action against the culprits,’ they said.
Besides these, atrocities against Dalits also took place at Kulangi and Durekhedai in Sorad Balichhai in Aska, Panchabhuti in Jagannath Prasad, Pangidi in Buguda, Sindhaba in Digapahandi and Sadangapalli in Dharakote blocks, they alleged.
‘We are concerned over the rise of atrocities in the district,’ said Bhala Chandra Sarangi, a tribal leader.
The administration should solve the disputes of the communities, he said.
Police, however, said they had already taken action against the accused persons.
‘In S. Gunduribadi case, we had already arrested 10 upper caste people,’ SDPO, Aska, Suryamani Pradhan said.
He said they had arrested five persons belonging to Dalit caste in the same counter case.
‘We will arrest others involved in the cases,’ he said.
