Bhubaneswar, Sept 29 (LocalWire): The maiden day of the Monsoon Session of Odisha Assembly today witnessed a stormy start with the opposition firing salvos against the government for introducing some controversial bills.
The opposition parties today raised their voices against the introduction of the Odisha Universities (Amendment) Bill 2020 amid pandemic.
Congress party leader Narasingha Mishra questioned the treasury bench on the intention of the government to introduce the bill at the pandemic time.
Leader of Opposition in the House and BJP leader Pradipta Naik also questioned the government over the introduction of the legislation and blamed the government for interfering into the affairs of universities in the state.
State Higher Education Minister Arun Sahoo however defended the bill and its provisions and termed it as beneficial for the academic sector.
The government was able to introduce six legislation today. The House started with obituary remarks including that of former President Pranab Mukherjee.
While a number of MLAs attended the House under glass covers, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik attended the Session from his residence through video conferencing.
