Berhampur, December 7 (LocalWire): The District Disability Rehabilitation Center (DDRC) in Kandhamal has conducted deformity correction surgery of 33 clubfoot children, including 15 girls across four districts.
The centre has been declared as a Model Nodal Center for Deformity Correction (MNCDC) by the state government.
The surgeons from Swami Vivekananda National Institute of Rehabilitation Training and Research (SVNIRTR), Olatapur, headed by Dr. KC Mohapatra have conducted surgeries on 36 children aged between six months to 13 years, with the help of local doctors during the last two days.
A special ward was earmarked for these patients at the district headquarter hospital in Phulbani and the patients will stay there for 21 days till their plaster is removed, said district disability rehabilitation officer AK Panda said, adding that the second plaster will be done for one-and half months.
“Removal of plaster and physiotherapy would be done for three weeks after the removal of plaster,” he stated.
Overall, 14 children from Kandhamal, four from Boudh, six from Sonepur, nine and Balangir have conducted the surgeries, he said.
“These poor students can’t go to Olatpur for their surgery. So we provided free-surgery in the district and invited the doctor team from SVNIRTR. At least Rs 30,000 was spent for each child for the treatment,” he said.
“I was very much worried when my son was born with clubfoot in his left foot. Now I can take a sigh of relief after operation of his feet.
The doctors have assured me that he will be cured after four months,” Subash Kanhar, whose son Abhaya was one of the beneficiaries, stated.
A similar opinion was shared by Banchha Bank, father of nine-month old Bharati of Biramaharaj Pur in Sonepur, whose surgery was also conducted at the camp.
“I hope she will be relived soon and get a new lease of life,” Banchha said.
“A separate 20-bed ward was set up in the district headquarter hospital Phulbani to conduct surgery and treatment of the patients and physiotherapy. Around four months’ time is needed for corrective of one’s deformity,” Panda said.
During the last ten years, the DDRC Kandhamal has conducted over 791 corrective surgeries giving new lease of life to 582 persons.
The first surgery camp was held in 2008-09, said Panda, while 60 per cent of the beneficiaries are from Kandhamal district, others are from Boudh, Sonepur, Rayagada, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj districts, he said.
