Berhampur, August 23 (LocalWire): The death anniversary of senior Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxamananand Saraswati was observed in Phulbani, Jalespata and Chakapada ashrams in Kandhamal district on Friday amidst tight security.
The inmates of the ashram and several local people participated in the day-long programme in two places to pay tribute to the leader on his tenth death anniversary.
Several followers of Swami Saraswati from different parts of the state also participated in the programmes, joint secretary of Kandhamal district VHP unit Manoj Kumar Sahoo said.
The inmates of Jalespata ashram took out a procession in the village.
The ashrams at Jalespata and Chakapada were set up by Swami Saraswati before his assassination on 23 August 2008, on the day of Janmasthami.
At Phulbani, a meeting was organised by the Sardhanjali Samaroh Samiti.
The speakers including the VHP organising secretary Anandji Pandey demanded that the Naidu Commission report probing the assassination of Swami be made public.
“We are concerned about the delay in making public the report by the Commission even after 11 years of the murder of Swami Saraswati,” a VHP leader Priyanath Sharma said.
No untoward incident was reported in the district during the celebration of his death anniversary, the local police said, adding that security was beefed up across the district.
“At least 12 platoons of police forces and several senior officers were deployed in the district to maintain law and order situation,” Kandhamal district superintendent of police (SP) Prateek Singh said.
Police had also alerted the central forces to keep a watch on the movements of Maoists in the district and combing operation was continued in different areas of the district, the SP stated.
“Saraswati and his four disciples were gunned down by unidentified miscreants at his Jalespata ashram on Janmasthami day.
His assassination had triggered communal and ethnic violence across Kandhamal that claimed over 40 lives and rendered thousands of people homeless in the district. The violence had also spread to some other districts in the state.
