Kendrapada, September 26 (Local Wire) Gourana Bal, a 45-year-old debt-ridden farmer of Jajpur district, committed suicide on Wednesday after witnessing wilted paddy saplings over his five acres land caused by recent incessant rains.
The deceased marginal farmer was the son of Jayaram Bal of Mangarajpur village under Dharmasala block.
He raised paddy after obtaining loan amount of Two Lakh rupees from a host of sources including the village Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society, Self Help Group and private moneylenders to purchase basic inputs like seeds and fertilizers.
But, the recent heavy monsoon splash ruined all his hopes to maintain the family of five members.
“My husband ended his life by hanging himself from a tree in the village over crop loss,” said Rasmita, widow of the deceased farmer who has two daughters and two sons.
She said her husband was very upset recently after watching damaged crops.
“The wife of the deceased farmer filed an FIR in the police station and alleged that her husband committed suicide due to crop loss,” said Umakanta Nayak, the in charge of Dharmasala police station.
