Balasore, Oct 20 (LocalWire) Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE), the missile testing wing of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under Ministry of Defence, conducted an awareness programme about the safety measures to be adopted by the people during and after missile testing at Chandipur-on-sea near here.
The programme was organised at Khadupahi school under Tundra GP yesterday in which over 1000 persons including local villagers, fishermen and trawlers and fishing vessel owners participated, official sources said here.
” The acquired range of PXE is about 19.5 km and the notified range for firing nearly 50 km .
There is always a potential danger since the range is surrounded by human settlements and a major fishing base close to the our base.
We need to create awareness among the people and we often do it,” said PXE Director DK Joshi.
The local villagers venture into the prohibited area of sea during firing to pick up empty shells.
At times they collect unfired shells as well causing accidents several times in the past. Besides, they carry the shells in their nets while fishing after the firing hours .
“The villagers also inadvertently cut fibre optic lines and underground electric supply resulting in a lot of problem to our system .
At times they also cut casuarina trees grown in the prohibited areas”, said a senior officer of PXE , Sangram Kesari Pati .
Among others, Dr KK Chand , additional director PXE, Dr PK Dasgupta associated director , Dr HS Panda , additional director , Col. Suman Dutta (officer commanding ) , Army head, Lt. Col AB Singh, range safety officer and chief security officer, Lt col. RK Bal , Joint director military wing addressed the gathering and sought cooperation.
