Berhampur, Dec 31 (LocalWire) The “delivery” van, which was introduced by Kandhamal administration about a fortnight ago in the tribal dominated district in a pilot basis, has facilitated the smooth delivery of a 30-year old woman of a remote village in Phiringia block, said officials on Monday.
Pratima Bindhani, wife of Dayanidhi Bidhani of Palendi village, went into labour on Saturday night.
In absence of emergency ambulances like 108 and 102 (Janani Express), the “delivery” van carried the pregnant woman to the Community Health Center (CHC), Phiringia, where she gave birth to a baby boy on Saturday night.
“Both the baby and mother are in good condition,” official sources said on Monday.
National Health Mission (NHM) programme manager Kandhamal Bulu Nath Sahu said the van was already equipped with all required instruments and medicines, along with four nursing staff, in case Pratima delivered mid-way.
“She was the first pregnant woman to be carried by the van to the CHC since its launch in December 15,” he said.
In a bid to encourage institutional delivery and to avoid delivery on the way to hospital, the Kandhamal administration introduced the “delivery van”, a first-of-its-kind in Odisha.
It is presently stationed at Phringia CHC.
