Bhubaneswar, Oct 14 (LocalWire): A pregnant woman delivered twin daughters in the veranda of the district headquarters hospital at Bhadrak after she was denied admission, official sources said.
The incident exposed gaping holes in the government-run health service network at a time when the state government has set in motion citizen-centric ‘Mo Sarkar’ (my government) initiative for better service in the health sector.
Ranulata Khillar was taken to the hospital in an ambulance after labour pains started.
However, instead of admitting her, the attending doctor allegedly referred her to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack.
As her condition was very serious, family members requested the authorities to help admit her and deliver but it fell on deaf ears, family members alleged.
The woman, who was waiting in the hospital veranda for medical help to arrive, delivered premature twin girls.
The newborn babies have been kept in the Sick New Born Care Unit (SNCU) of the hospital.
As the news spread, local people demonstrated demanding action against the concerned authorities.
Senior district authorities also rushed in to take stock of the situation.
The incident is being inquired into. If lapses are found, action will be initiated against those who reportedly denied admission to the pregnant woman, said a senior official of Bhadrak district headquarters hospital.
