Berhampur, Feb 21 (LocalWire) Thousands of devotees from across Odisha and Andhra Pradesh thronged to the historic Gokarneshwar temple, situated in the hill-top of the Mahendragiri in Gajapati district on Friday.
Devotees flocked just to have a glimpse of the Shiva Linga and the Sun shine from the top of the mountain early morning, on occasion of Maha Shivaratri.
The devotees from far off places spent the night at the hill-top situated about 3000- feet above the sea level, a day before the Shivaratri and waited till the early Sun rise.
Over 50,000 people have gathered at the hill top.
People believe that the sins of a person will be washed away, if one witnesses the Sun rise as well as the Gokarneshwar Linga on the early morning of the Shivaratri in Mahendragiri.
There are four other temples dedicated to Yudhistira, Bhima, Arjuna and Kunti situated in the picturesque hill-top.
“We have made light arrangements by providing 15 generators, drinking water and health facilities, and somooth roads” said district collector, Anupam Saha .
At least two tehsildars and block development officers were monitoring the situation, in the hilltop, he said.
Police have made tight security arrangement in and around the hill-top.
At least 7 platoons of forces, several officers were deployed to maintain law and order situation and traffic control, said SP (Gajapati) Sarah Sharma. A temporary police control room was set up near the temple, he said.
