Jagatsinghpur, Dec 24 (LocalWire) Hundreds of women activists of several Self Help Groups (SHGs) on Monday united at Paida panchayat under Erasama police limit and staged a dharna on road near Dihashai High School after conducting mass rallies for a liquor-free panchyat.
According to sources, illicit liquor trade is flourishing at various villages of Paida panchyat under Erasama police limit with the knowledge of police and excise officials.
Local people, including women, blockaded road demanding to stop liquor trade.
“Country liquor is being sold in open outlets and even at betel shops without any license. Though, villagers asked the district administration to take action against traders and erring officials to stop the growing the menace, but no action has yet taken against them,” said an agitator.
“There is thus a rise of drunkard and miscreants in these rural areas. After drinking liquor, they misbehave with local village women. There is even a rise in gambling in Dihashai, Kanjikana, Bentajhar, Thakurbari, Gaudashai and Bachpur villages. Children are scared to go to schools via these roads where these drunkards flock and gamble,” said another villager..
On Monday, village women, under anti-liquor activist Manorama Sahoo, demonstrated stir and mass rallies in the panchyat to ban sale of illicit liquor.
