Rourkela, December 12 (LocalWire): In a unique initiative to create traffic safety awareness among the city residents, the deputy inspector general (DIG) and the superintendent of police (SP) led a motorbike rally of police personnel on Thursday.
The local residents were in for a surprise when they saw Western Range DIG Kabita Jalan and SP K Siba Subramani in full helmet riding a red Royal Enfield, leading a group of police personnel from SP office Rourkela till the busy Birsa Chowk.
“The basic idea was to create awareness regarding road safety, which has become pertinent following the government drive to reduce road accidents and mortality,” the SP said, adding that despite the best efforts by the police, people are still reluctant to wear crash helmets.
“They still continue to do triple pillion riding, speeding, drunken driving and avoid using the car seat belt. This is an endeavour to create awareness amongst the residents to abide by these simple life saving rules,” he said.
The rally that passed through some of the busy roads and was earlier flagged off by DIG Jalan. It was coordinated and planned by one of the local social organisation Sai Parivar.
The police officials were also seen speaking to bikers and car drivers about the need for road safety.
The initiative was well appreciated by the locals.
