Kendrapara, July 10 (LocalWire): Dutee Chand, the sprint running champion who won two silver medals at the Jakarta Asian Games, tried to sell her BMW on social media in order to arrange money for her training.
“I bought a BMW two years ago when the State Government rewarded me with Rs 3 crores for my achievements in the Asian Games.
Two years ago, the State Government also granted me Rs 50 lakhs for my training for the Tokyo Olympics.
I spent nearly Rs 5 lakh per month on my training, which includes the salaries of my coach, physiotherapist, dietician among other purposes for which, all the money accorded to me for my training is now exhausted.
Now it is even more difficult to get sponsors for my training due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I need money for maintaining my fitness and training, however due to the lack of sponsors, I decided to sell my car,” Dutee said.
Dutee practices at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar for the Tokyo Olympics.
Meanwhile, after her post on Facebook for selling her car, comments poured in from different quarters seeking government intervention for helping her out, terming her the pride of Odisha.
Dutee had won two medals at the Jakarta Asian Games in the womens’ 100 m and 200 m races, two years ago.
Four years ago, she became the second Indian woman (after P.T. Usha, who had qualified in the 1980 Olympics) to qualify for the 100 m event in Rio Olympics.
