Bhubaneswar, Sept 21 (LocalWire): The Bijepur Assembly seat in Bargarh district will go for by-polls on 21 October, the Election Commission of India announced today.
The notification for the by-election would be issued on 23 September and counting will be held on 24 October, the EC notification said.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik vacated the Bijepur Assembly seat and retained Hinjili, thus paving the way for by polls in Bijepur.
The BJD supremo had contested two Assembly constituencies for the first time and had emerged victorious from both.
The voters of the Bijepur Assembly seat, a predominantly rural and agrarian belt, are facing polls for the third time in the past one-and-a-half year.
The Assembly seat had gone for by-elections on 24 February, 2018 following the death of Congress MLA Subal Sahu.
BJD’s Rita Sahu, widow of deceased Congress MLA Sahu, had defeated her nearest rival, the BJP nominee by over 41,000 votes.
IBijepur once again went to polls on 18 April during the twin polls in the state when the chief minister won the seat with a thumping mandate.
