Bhubaneswar, September 11 (LocalWire): Authorities of Dhenkanal forest division have embarked on an exercise to rescue a distressed male adult elephant that has fallen into a flooded irrigation canal.
“The tusker is stuck in Badajhari-Rengali irrigation canal near Parajanga forest area. The animal is unable to tide across the canal as it is in spate due to heavy rainfall since the past 24 hours. We are trying to drag the elephant to safety,” a forest official said.
The elephant had got separated from the herd and had slipped into the canal that falls in the movement path of pachyderms. The locals informed the forest officials about the incident after they spotted the distressed animal.
Dhenkanal district is home to 81 elephants. Traditional migration corridors of elephants have got decimated as irrigation canals have been dug out along the migration paths of these animals. As a result, the animals often get trapped in the canals that come under their traditional migration routes.
