Bhubaneswar, Jan 19 (LocalWire) Sunanda Patnaik, one of Odisha’s foremost classical singers, breathed her last in Kolkata today at the age of 85 in a private hospital.
She was suffering from old-age complications.
According to family sources, her mortal remains will be brought to her residence at Salt Lake area in Kolkata from where will be taken for cremation.
On her death, Indian classical music has lost one of its most euphonious voices.

She was born to legendary Odia poet Baikunthanath Patnaik on November 7, 1934.
Popularly known as Gurumaa, she has received several awards for her contribution to Hindustani music.
She first made her public debut as a singer in All India Radio in 1948 at the age of 14.
The then Odisha Governor Asaf Ali heard her and was mesmerized with her voice.
The then-president Dr Rajendra Prasad heard her voice during his Odisha visit and was impressed so much that he helped her undertake professional music training under Pandit Vinayak Rao Pattavardhan.
Sunanda had completed five years of course in just four years. After completion of the course, she performed at All India Radio.
She had also performed at All India Sadrang Sangeet Sammelan in Calcutta in September 1957.
Legendary Indian classical sitar player Ustad Vilayat Khan was also impressed by her singing.
She had created several Ragas including Subarnamukhi and Nilamadhab.
National award-winning Odia Movie ‘Nialamadham’ was filmed on the life sketch of Sunanda Patnaik produced by Dilip Patnaik.
She was honoured with Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1970 and 1971 and lifetime achievement award from the Orissa Society of the Americas (OSA) in 2012.
She was awarded Sangeet Natak academy award (Tagore Akademi Puraskar) for the year 2012.
The degree of doctor of literature was conferred to her by the Utkal University in 1999 and the degree of doctor of music was conferred by the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal in 1975.
Famous song in her melodious voice ‘jibana patra mo bharichha kete’ remains an all-time hit.
