Berhampur, August 7 (LocalWire): Students of government-run Parala Maharaja Engineering College, near here, today agitated in front of the college gate, insisting their long-standing hostel-related demands be fulfilled at the earliest.
The college has three hostels, including a hostel for girls, housing 800 students.
Students alleged they were being served low-quality food in the hostels and demanded the appointment of a new vendor after calling for a tender, separate the kitchen from the hostel for safety purposes and provide water cooler to every hostel.
Braving rains, agitating students locked the man gate of the college and did not allow staffs to enter.
‘These are our long-standing demands. But the college authorities are not paying any heed.
The agitation will continue till the demands are met, the students said.
Teaching faculties tried to convince the agitators as the college principal was out of station.
The students said three students were injured after a LPG pipeline blast in the hostel kitchen on Thursday.
The incident took place when the students assembled near the kitchen for breakfast.
The injured were treated at MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
College principal Ranjan Swain said, ‘I am keeping a tab on the development of the students’ agitation.
We will try to fulfill some of their demands.
The in-charge principal, Sarat Chandra Sahu, is negotiating with the agitating students.
