Berhampur, Dec 26 (LocalWire): Over 100 irate women from A Barida village under Ganjam district’s Kabisurya Nagara police station today set an illegal country liquor shop and manufacturing unit at Bhatapada near their village afire.
Last night they set ablaze a licensed foreign liquor shop and ransacked one of its branches in their village.
Police and excise officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. ‘We tried to pacify the agitators after taking stock of the situation,’ said inspector in charge, Kabisurya Nagara police station, Pravat Sahoo.
He said no case was registered as no one lodged an FIR.
Excise superintendent Ganjam, Rajendra Kumar Bhotra, said no one from the Indian made foreign liquor had approached them with a complaint.
He however clarified that the other two shops which they set ablaze of Thursday morning, were running without license.
Agitators said they had demanded the closure of the liquor shop several times as local youths turned addicts and wasted a substantial amount of their earnings on liquor.
Alcohol tore apart many families that mostly depended on farming, said one of the agitating women.
