Paradip, March 10(LocalWire): The Central excise squad busted a ganja racket here and seized a huge quantity of the contraband drugs.
Ganja smugglers are active in Paradip and other areas of Jagatsinghpur district and local police and excise officials have failed to arrest the culprits.
Suspecting a nexus between ganja smugglers and local excise officials, the Central excise squad, Cuttack, were engaged in the operation. They arrested a smuggler and seized 44 kg ganja from his possession near IFFCO chowk on Cuttack- Paradip state highway on Saturday.
Earlier, in separate incidents, the Central squad had recovered ganja weighing 104 kgs from different raids. Two people including one woman were arrested. Besides this, Paradip Police had seized 12 kg ganja and arrested one person.
Smugglers have also shifted their focus from Paradip, Tirtol and Kujang to other areas and are using the water, rail and road connectivity to transport the banned material.
Asenior police officer said it was difficult for them to nab individuals carrying small quantities of ganja. ‘We can track peddlers if the quantity is more. Persons carrying two to five kg of ganja are difficult to nab as it can be hidden anywhere. We mainly rely on tip-offs in such cases,’ he added.
