Berhampur, Feb 4 (LocalWire): The family members of an accident victim of Digapahandi in Ganjam district donated her organ after the doctors declared her brain-dead on Monday.
It helped save a patient at the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, where a team of doctors successfully transplanted the kidney on Tuesday.
On 26 January, V. Priyanka Rani Patra (27) along with her six-year-old daughter had sustained severe injuries in a road accident at Ganianalh, near Digapahandi.
The duo was admitted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.
After struggling for her life for nine days, the doctors declared her brain-dead.
V. Dharma Raju, the father-in-law of the deceased told LocalWire, “After the doctors declared her brain dead, we decided to donate her organs. We have also given our consent in writing.”
They have taken her kidney for now, as the transplantation facilities of other organs are not available at present, he added.
The husband of the deceased, Sameer Kumar Raju, said, “Though my wife had not declared herself as an organ donor, we have decided the same owing to my father’s concern towards the same.”
Dharma Raju (70), the President of Khemundi Volunteer Blood Donors Association, has already donated his blood around 80 times to motivate people to indulge in the same.
He has also pledged to donate his body for the medical purposes after his death.
