Bhubaneswar, May 3 (LocalWire): The extremely severe cyclone Fani lashed close to Puri and the landfall process with a wind speed of around 185 kmph has begun from 8.00 a.m, the IMD said.
The landfall is expected to continue for the next two hours, it added.
Puri and its surroundings is witnessing winds with a speed of 145 kmph that could reach up to 180-200 kmph, Mritunjay Mohapatra, in-charge of the cyclone warning division of the IMD, was quoted by PTI.
At least 14 districts are in the path of the cyclone and nearly 12 lakh people have been evacuated in the last 24 hours.
Preventive measures have been taken in coastal areas like Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Naygarh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal and Keonjhar which are on the path of the severe storm.
Ganjam and Puri evacuated more than 3 lakh and 1.3 lakh people respectively to relief centres and 5000 kitchens started operating to serve people in the shelters.
