Berhampur, May 1 (Localwire): People are being evacuated from allareas of Gajapati and Ganjam districts that could possibly be affectedby cyclone Fani, expected to hit Odisha by Friday next, officials said.
‘We have already started to shift people from the hill-top areas in the district. People from other areas will be shifted on Thursday”
Gajapati collector Anupam Saha said.
The district administration has identified around 30,000 people from 316 villages to be shifted to the safer places, sources said.
As many as 298 school buildings have been readied to house the affected people, the sources added.
“They will be provided with free kitchen, drinking water and other facilities during their stay at the shelter homes,” the collector said.
This time around, the district administration leaving no stone unturned as the district was one of the worst affect areas in the state when the cyclone Titli hit it in October last year.
At least 50 people, mostly from the villages located on the hill-tops, were killed due to the massive landslides triggered by the cyclone Titili, Thousands were rendered homeless following the damage to houses.
“We have taken all precautionary measures for the safety and security of the people,” the district collector said.
In Ganjam district, over 1.28 lakh people of different blocks will be shifted to the safer places like school buildings and multi-purpose cyclone shelter centers, said district magistrate Vijay Amruta Kulange.
“The number of people may increase,” he said, adding that ” We will not allow people to live in kutcha houses during the cyclone,” he said.
“As many as 580 salter homes, including 77 multi-purpose cyclone centers have been opened to house these people. If necessary, the multi-storied buildings will be used as the shelter home for the people,” he said five teams have been constituted in each block to convince people to shift the safer places.
