Bhubaneswar (LocalWire) July 11: With the Patkura assembly by-poll fast becoming a test of Modi versus BJD mandate in the recently concluded Parliamentary and Assembly elections, both ruling and main opposition parties in the state are trying to cash on the farmers’ plight with sympathy and promises alike.
The issues related to farmers were the principal poll planks in the recently-concluded twin elections in Odisha and with the erratic monsoon playing spoilsport in the Kharif season, the plight of farmers is fast becoming the focal issue for all parties and candidates as the campaigning is picking up steam in Kendrapara district.
The economy of the Garadpur, Marshaghai and Derabish blocks that fall under the Patkura assembly constituency has a heavy dependence on agriculture and deficient rainfall has adversely affected the farmers in the region as hundreds of acres rain-fed Kharif fields wear blank look with no signs sowing of paddy crops.
While the ruling BJD is harping on its flagship KALIA direct cash transfer scheme to woo the agrarian community, the BJP is highlighting the center’s Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme to impress the electorates.
The Congress, on the other hand, is describing the principal political opponents as anti-farmer to seek votes in favour of the party.
