Rourkela, Dec 1 (LocalWire): A father-son duo was allegedly run over by a speeding tipper, following which hundreds of locals staged a road blockade at Hockey Square area of Rourkela city on Saturday morning.
According to police sources, at about 10.30 pm on Friday, Munna Lal Seth (54) and his son Sambhu Lal Seth (32), residents of Sardar basti area of Balughat area, were crossing the road at Hockey Chowk, when a speeding dumper crushed them to death.
Although the tipper fled the spot after the accident, a group of locals chased it and handed over the tipper driver to the police after few hours. .
Hundreds of locals, mainly from Bhalughat area, staged a road blockade on National Highway (NH) 143 around 8 am on Saturday demanding compensation for the deceased’s family and construction of speed breakers at the spot.
The road blockade was lifted after about five hours, post an assurance of Rs. 1.6 lakh compensation to the victims’ family by the tipper owner..
“The blockade was finally vacated at around 3 pm, after owner of the vehicle, which caused the accident, agreed to pay Rs. 1.6 lakh compensation to the victims’ family,” said Raghunathpalli police sub inspector D Sahoo.
