Berhampur: February 28(LocalWire): The first child-friendly police station, in association with the district child protection office, was opened by the Inspector General of Police, Mr Arun Bothra, on Wednesday at Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district.
‘It’s a good initiative taken by SP (Gajapati) Sara Sharma. We will try to replicate this in other police stations too” Mr Bothra said.
‘The main purpose of the initiative is to erase fear of police from the child’s mind’ said Ms Sharma. ‘Women often come to the police station along with their toddlers.
A dedicated room with cartoon characters and colourful drawings on its walls and a toy zone with indoor games would help keep the child busy,’ she explained.
Kerala was the first state to start this initiative after the country’s apex child-protection body, National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, had recommended a child-friendly corner or room in all police stations and also released guidelines for the same in June last year.
