Bhubaneswar, August 19 (LocalWire): The state government sounded flood alert in Keonjhar and Jajpur district today afternoon with the steady swelling of Baitarani river in the past 24 hours.
‘The Baitarani river is in spate and the water level is anticipated to cross the danger mark by 9 pm today as per Central Water Commission (CWC)’s report.
While the river is flowing at 17.83 metre at present, it is most likely to cross the 18-metre danger mark tonight,’ the latest bulletin from the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC)’s office read.
The authorities of both districts have been directed to immediately evacuate people from low-lying areas to safety of temporary relief shelters with provisions of cooked and dry food, safe drinking water besides medical facility, it said.
The water resources department engineers are inspecting the embankments downstream river Baitarani that are susceptible to breach.
Sand bags and bamboo poles are being installed at vulnerable spots to thwart possible breach.
Evacuation has already begun, said Jajpur Collector, Ranjan Kumar Das.
