Berhampur, Dec 14 (LocalWire) A forest staff was injured following an attack by villagers at Damodarapalli under Ganjam district’s Digapahandi forest range, said police on Friday.
The injured person was identified as Krushna Jena (25), a member of the wildlife squad- engaged for anti-poaching of wildlife and to track elephant movements in the area, official sources said.
Led by forest range officer Digapahandi Paramananda Panigrahy, wildlife squad members had rushed to the village on Thursday evening after getting information about a herd of six stray elephants entering the village.
“When the team entered the village to drive away the elephants, they were attacked by the villagers,” said Berhampur divisional forest officer Ashish Kumar Behera.
Elaborating, Behera said: “The villagers were pelting stones and burning torches near the elephants. When wildlife squad members tried to convince them not to tease the animals, they started to attack the squad and physically assaulted Jena.”
Jena’s condition is now stable, he added.
A case has been registered at Digapahandi police station in this regard, sources said.
