Berhampur, Dec15 (LocalWire): Police today arrested seven people, including the former councilor of Notified Area Council (NAC) Aska, involved in illegally extracting and transporting sand from Rushikulya river bed at Sunambha sand quarry.
Acting on a tip off, raids were conducted at the Sunambha quarry,’ said inspector-in charge PK Sahoo.
Six vehicles and an excavator, several forged transit passes and two magic pens used to alter date, time and destination of the sand being transported, were seized, said SDPO Aska, Suryamani Pradhan. The lease holder of the quarry, however, fled, police said.
Kailas Pradhan, former councilor of Pakalapalli and the drivers of vehicles were arrested under different sections of IPC and Odisha Mineral (Prevention of theft, trading and transportation) Rule 2017, police said.
‘We are searching for the lease holder for further inquiry and also to find out others who are involved in illegal sand transportation,’ Sahoo added.
