Berhampur, November 5 (LocalWire): The Congress in Ganjam district received a severe setback with several of the party members in Digapahandi assembly constituency joining the ruling BJD at Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
Led by former NAC chairperson of Digapahandi V Ravi Raju several former councilors and sarpanch joined in the BJD in presence of the party supremo Naveen Patnaik and Berhampur MP Chandra Sekhar Sahu at Naveen Niwas.
Raju, a senior Congress leader had twice served as the chairman of the civic body in Digapahandi.
“Our organisation will be further strengthened in Ganjam in general, Digapahandi in particular after their joining the party,” Berhampur MP Sahu said.
“We decided to join BJD as we believe that only chief minister Naveen Patnaik can develop the state, including the Ganjam district,” Raju stated, adding that there was no condition with the regional party on his joining.
“I will work for the welfare of the party as per the direction of the party supremo,” he stated.
The Digapahandi assembly is presently represented by the assembly speaker Surya Narayan Patro.
