Bhubaneswar, Dec 8 (LocalWire) President Ram Nath Kovind today laid the foundation stone of the Paika Rebellion Memorial at Barunei Hill in Khurda and said the monument is a reminder of the combative spirit of Odia people.
The memorial will play a key role in striking a chord with visitors and tourists on the rich history of the State and heroic legacy of its people, the President said.
Among others, Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture Prahlad Singh Patel and Union Minister Pratap Sarangi graced the function held for the occasion.
The Paika rebellion or uprising, also called the Paika Bidroha, was an armed revolt against the British East India Company’s rule in Odisha in 1817.
The Paikas rose in rebellion under the leadership of Bakshi Jagabandhu Bidyadhar and it spread across most parts of Odisha. The Paikas were warriors and traditional landed militia of Odisha.
