Jajpur, Dec 6 (LocalWire) The Jajpur district administration on Thursday raided four illegal orphanage and shelter homes run by a foreign missionary and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in tribal dominated villages of Sukinda and Danagadi blocks.
“During our investigation, we found a foreign missionary is illegally running a boys hostel at Nadiabhanga village and a girls home at Bausanali village under Danagadi block. There are 70 boys and 50 girls in both centers,” said Jajpur District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Niranjan Kar.
“We also raided two children’s homes at Gobaraghai village run by a New Delhi based NGO since last three years. We found 120 boys and 102 girls, aged between 5 to 16 years, in both the homes,” he said.
Kar further said: “When we checked, we found some of them had single parent. Statements of some children have been recorded. We seized some registers and other documents.”
He said preliminary investigation has revealed that all the homes were not registered with the government.
“We are also probing the funding sources of all these shelter homes. Our inquiry will ascertain if proper procedure was followed in keeping these kids. A report will soon be submitted to the district administration,” said Kar.
Recently, women and child development minister Prafulla Samal has directed the district administration to take action against unregistered and illegal shelter homes in the state.
Earlier this year, the central government had directed all states to inspect shelter homes in the aftermath of two alleged sexual abuse cases in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
