Berhampur, June 9 (LocalWire): Four people, including three women, were killed by lightning in separate incidents in Ganjam district during the last 24 hours, officials said on Sunday. Around 20 animals also died after getting struck by lightning.
The deceased were identified as Malati Nayak of Khariaguda, Raghunath Gouda of Turubudi under Patrapur tehsil, Sushama Naik of Shankarakhol under Digaphandi tehsil and Pandi Behera of Chingudighai in Purushottampur tehsil, officials said.
While three women were working in the farm, Ragunath, was going to graze his buffaloes. His body was later recovered by family members after a search operaton in the nearby jungle. Lightning also claimed at least 20 cattle, sheep and goat in different areas in the district.
Local people and family members of the deceased rushed them to nearby hospitals but the doctors declared them brought dead, sources said.
Digapahandi tehsildar AP Swain said Sushama Naik’s family would receive compensation after the post-mortem report.
