Berhampur, August 5 (LocalWire): Citizens of Silk City on Sunday celebrated Friendship Day by vowing to do their bit by being friends with trees and protecting them.
To commemorate the event, they felicitated a 150-year old banyan tree here by tying a rope around it.
‘Literary, a tree is our true friend. It gives life unconditionally.
We have to protect the trees to save our lives,’ MP (Berhampur) Chandra Sekhar Sahu, said while attending a function organized by Berhampur Sabuj Bahini, an organization working towards protecting trees.
Among others, Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange, commissioner, Berhampur Municipal Corporation, Chakrabarti Singh Rathore, MLA (Berhampur) Bikram Kumar Panda, former MLA (Berhampur) R Ch Chyauptanaik and several activists and students attended the programme.
Before making an awareness rally was taken out in the main areas of the city, they planted trees in the BeMC office premises.
‘When we all joined together to protect trees by being friends with them, the lost greenery in Silk City will be regained,’ the Collector said.
The city is losing its greenery following uprooting of trees after repeated cyclones every year since 2013.
‘The purpose will not be solved by planting trees but once we start protecting the trees and save them from pre-mature death,’ said Sibaram Panigrahy, president of organization.
The organization has also been removing nails and hoardings from the trees, which create obstacle on the growth of the plants.
The members are also translocating trees without axing them.
In the last four months, we have translocated about 50 trees in different areas and removed nails from 1500 trees in the last eight months,’ said secretary of the organization, M.Dillip Kumar.
