Berhampur, May 3 (LocalWire): The tribal-dominated Gajapati district, that was badly ravaged by the severe cyclone Titli in October last year, was spared by the extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani today.
Besides moderate rainfall, no damage was reported from here.
‘We have not received news of any damage of infrastructure, houses or human causality so far,’ said Gajapati Collector Anupam Saha. He, however, said he was waiting for detailed reports from block levels.
The Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border district was severely affected due to Titli eight months ago. Around 50 people lost their lives due to massive landslides and thousands of people were rendered homeless while extensive damage to roads, irrigation facilities and power was reported.
The district administration therefore left no stone unturned this time to ensure the safety of the people from the fury of Fani. They evacuated 48,975 people across the district to 623 shelters.
Since Gajapati has no multi-purpose shelter homes to house the people during natural calamities, they were given shelter in nearby school buildings and anganwadi centres, sources said.
