Berhampur, Dec 25 (LocalWire): A Odisha state cooperative milk producers’ federation limited (OMFED) parlour set up by transgenders opened at Paralakhemundi, the district headquarter town of Gajapati.
The cafe in the premises of the district headquarters hospital, was inaugurated by MLA (Paralakhemundi) N Narayan Rao today.
Gajapati police have helped set up the cafe where all OMFED products will be available.
An eight-member group of transgenders will manage the parlour, where they will also sell tea and coffee.
‘We arranged an abandoned room in the hospital premises and collected materials from donors for the parlour,’ said SP (Gajapati) Sarah Sharma, who was also present during the inaugural ceremony.
Gajapati Police also arranged for their uniform and caps, she said.
‘We thought this as an opportunity to bring the transgenders into the mainstream and interact one-to-one with society at large,’ said the SP.
Besides, this would also make them self-reliant.
This initiative might also encourage others from their community to come forward and open a business after seeing them taste success, she added.
