Berhampur, December 22 (LocalWire): Following the footsteps of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), the district administration in Gajapati has rolled out the meal in exchange of plastic initiative here.
The programme was launched b the state SC/ST Development minister Jagannath Sarka at Paralakhemundi on Saturday.
The initiative is aimed to create a plastic-free town and to create awareness among the people to curb the use of products that may cause environmental pollution, Gajapati collector Anupam Saha said.
The initiative has been rolled out under the state government’s Aahar scheme.
Under the scheme, the district authority will provide one meal at the Aahar center in exchange for every half kg of plastic waste material.
“The facility will be available only in Paralakhemundi town and the meal will be served from the Aahar center in the bus-stand area of the town.
With this initiative anyone can go to the Aaahar center in Paralakhemundi avail the Rs five meal by and by depositing half kg plastic waste,” he added.
Praising the district administration’s initiative to make Paralakhemundi into a plastic-free town, the minister said the programme will help in meeting the food security needs of people.
