Berhampur, January 10 (Localwire): The King of Paralakhemundi and two-time MP from Berhampur Gopinath Gajapati Narayan Deo passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, early morning on Friday.
He was 77 and is survived by a daughter, Kalyani Devi.
Gajapati was suffering from several ailments for a few years and undergoing treatment in the hospital.
He had earlier undergone treatment at a hospital in Chennai and was shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar three years ago.
Born on 6 March 1943, Gajapati was elected to Lok Sabha on Congress ticket in 1989 and 1991.
He later joined BJP in 1998 and then the ruling BJD in 2009.
Several leaders, including the chief minister Naveen Patnaik, expressed deep grief at the passing away of Parala Maharaja.
“His death is a great loss for Odisha,” the chief minister said, conveying his deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
His last rites will be performed at Paralakhemundi in presence of several dignitaries and the state forest minister Bikram Keshari Arukh will be attending it on behalf of the chief minister, sources said.
