Berhampur, Oct 11 (LocalWire): In one of the major gambling crackdowns this year, police today arrested two former corporators of Berhampur Municipal Corporation, a nationalized bank branch manager, a primary school teacher and an advocate along with 10 others on charges of gambling in a house at Bhimarao Peta Street under Berhampur town police station limits.
Police seized over Rs 7.60 lakh cash, five motorcycles, 16 mobile phone sets, 104 playing cards from the spot, SDPO Berhampur Bishnu Prasad Pati said.
Police raided the house where the gambling den was operating after a tip off. ‘The arrested belong to different areas of the Silk City and have been booked under relevant Sections of the Orissa Preventation of Gambling Act,’ said inspector in charge, town police station SK Tripathy.
One of the arrested ex-corporaters of the BeMC is also the member of Aam Police – the community policing system. ‘His membership will be terminated from the Aam Police Samiti,’ he said.
Meanwhile, SP (Ganjam) Brijesh Kumar Rai suspended a police constable of Buguda police station yesterday after a video went viral in social media where the constable . Suspended constable Kalu Charan Padhy is seen gambling in his village Kanhiapalli near Polasara.
The SP also entrusted the Bhanjanagar SDPO to inquire into the matter and take action against the constable as per law.
