Berhampur, August 24 (LocalWire): Several milkmen in Ganjam district on Saturday assembled here to celebrate the traditional Nanda Utsav, the festival held a day after the Janmasthami, the birth festival of Lord Krishna.
Cultural programmes, colourful processions along with the breaking of the dahi handi marked the day-long festival that was organised by the Nanda Mahotsav committee.
The committee also felicitated meritorious students of the community, who excelled in the last High School Certificate and Plus II Examinations.
Breaking the dahi handi was the most significant and attractive part of the celebration.
However, the organising team ensured that no child below 12 years participated in the dahi handi contest.
“Since the Supreme Court had directed that no child below 12-year old should be allowed to participate in dahi handi, we did not allow the children to form a pyramid,” the milkmen association Solakhanda Gopal Samaj general secretary Narayan Mahankuda said.
“Although we celebrate this festival every year at the village level, during the last few years we have been celebrating it in an organised manner here.
Most of the milkmen from around 30 villages in different parts of the district assembled for the celebration,” Mahotsav committee president Bidyadhar Gouda said.
“We have also discussed the problems faced by the community and will submit a memorandum to the government,” Mahankuda said.
