Berhampur, July 11 (LocalWire): Families of labourers from different villages of Ganjam district’s Chhatrapur, Khallikote Beguniapada blocks, living in deplorable condition in Dubai, implored the administration here to bring them back.
The labourers’ plight came to light when they sent video clippings from Dubai.
They are allegedly not getting wages for the last seven months.
The family members of the stranded labourers requested the district Collector for their safe repartition from the Gulf on Wednesday.
Geeta Polai, wife of Nabaghan Polai of Manikapur in Khallikote block appealed to the district administration for his safe repartition.
‘We have conducted an inquiry after discussing with the family of the victims as directed by Collector Vijya Amruta Kulange.
The inquiry report was submitted to the state labour commissioner and district administration for further action,’ said district labour officer, Chhatrapur, Siba Narayan Sahoo.
During inquiry they came to know the labourers had gone to Dubai through a labour agent in November via Chennai, he said.
Each of them had paid Rs 60,000. They were promised Rs 35,000 per month but they did not get their wages for the last seven months, he said.
The labourers complained that they were working overtime and the owner of the company debarred them from going outside, alleged Geeta.
The DLO said ‘We will inquire about the labour agent who had taken them to Dubai.
Action will be taken against him if he is a fake labour agent,’ he added.
DLO also appealed the people to register their address in the panchayat offices before leaving outside the village to work.
In the last month, as many as seven Odia labourers from Ganjam district, who were stranded in Sharjah, were rescued and safely repatriated to their native villages following the intervention of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
He had taken up the matter with the union external affair minister S Jaishankar who did his bit to bring the labourers home.
