Berhampur, Jan 7 (LocalWire) With General and state Assembly elections round the corner, the Ganjam district administration on Monday launched an awareness drive on the use of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines among the voters.
The Election Commission has decided to use the VVPAT machine in the ensuing elections for the first time in the state.
As many as 82 vehicles and 504 persons have been engaged in the 40-day awareness drive to cover almost all booths under 13 assembly segments and two Lok Sabha seats in the district.
The district has 3053 booths in 13 state Assembly segments and two Lok Sabha seats (Aska and Berhampur).
Ganjam collector Vijay Amruta Kulange flagged off the poll awareness vehicles at Chhatrapur, the district headquarters town, in presence of joint chief election officer of the state Satrughna Kar.
In Berhampur, sub collector (Berhampur) Digant Routray flagged off the vehicles.
The district administration has started making the voters aware about the working of it under the “Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation” (SVEEP) programme.
The SVEEP also aims to raise awareness to exercise the franchise by every voter on the poll day.
Besides covering almost all 4237 revenue villages, they are also conducting demonstration of the machines and mock polling in the crowded places and answer all the quarries of the people on the use of VVIP, said district election officer Bijayananda Sethi.
He said the district administration has sufficient number of VVIP machines to conduct demo in the villages.
The Election Commission has decided to introduce the VVPT machine after doubts were raised on the authenticity of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
The VVPAT will be acted as a second checkpoint in the voting, sources said.
The VVPAT machine is used to verify that a vote polled by a particular voter has gone to the candidate for whom the voter has pushed the button in EVM.
When the voter presses button in EVM, the VVPAT machine prints a slip having the name of candidate and election symbol for which voter has voted.
It’s visible only to the voter for few seconds, after which VVPAT machine cuts it and it drops into a box, sources said.
