Berhampur, Sept 12 (LocalWire): In a major haul, police today seized nearly 3000 kg ganja near Badagada in Ganjam district, worth over Rs 3 crore in the open market.
Police arrested four people for illegally transporting the narcotic substances.
This was the second major haul of marijuana in the district within ten days.
The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) Bhubaneswar, had seized around 989 kg cannabis worth nearly Rs 1.48 crore in the grey market from an onion-laden truck on Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border, near Berhampur on 2 September.
SP (Ganjam) Brajesh Rai said that since they were still weighing the seized ganja in the presence of a magistrate, the exact quantity and where they were being smuggled to would be known only after the interrogating the accused.
Jacob Majhi, Mujesh Gamanga, Sidhu Gamanga and Manual Mandal, arrested during the seize, are all from Adaba area of Gajapati district, police said.
Two mini trucks and one car were transporting huge quantities of ganja in packets from Adava area in Gajapati district towards Berhampur when the police, acting on a tip-off seized them at Badagada this afternoon.
Last month, police had seized over 974 kg ganja covered with bags of ragi and corn while being transported in a truck near Golagandapalli on National Highway 16 under Rambha police station. Two smugglers were arrested.
Police had seized over 600 kg ganja near Chhatrapur on NH 16 in March with the help of Andhra Pradesh police.
Similarly, in February, they had seized ganja weighing around 800 kg, near Gangapur on Bhanjanagar-Aska road.
