Berhampur, October 1 (LocalWire): As many as 280 people have so far lost their lives in road accidents during the eight months of this year in Ganjam district.
According to the official sources, over 530 road mishaps have been reported during the January to August period this year, including a maximum of 67 fatal incidents on the National Highway number 16 (NH16) that passes through the district.
During the corresponding period last year in 2018, as many as 514 road accidents had been reported and 276 lives were lost.
Like in 2019, maximum numbers of accidents in 2018 were also reported to have occurred on NH16, claiming 71 lives last year.
Meanwhile, the district administration has decided to closely monitor the traffic system on the National Highway and installation of surveillance cameras.
As many as 155 surveillance devices, including closed-circuit cameras will keep a tab on the movement of vehicles on the 64-km stretch of NH16 which falls in the district.
The footage from these cameras will be monitored from a control room to be set up at the toll plaza, near Khallikote, sources said.
Installation of surveillance camera and setting up of the control room for the purpose are part of advanced traffic management system being implemented by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), while the authority is undertaking the widening of the NH16.
“The surveillance camera will be set up at every 500-meter on the NH stretch,” said an officer of the construction company, hired by the NHAI.
“The work for the installation of the surveillance cameras, including CCTV and video cameras were expected to be completed within next two months,” Vijay Kumar, a senior officer of the road construction company, said.
District collector Vijay Amruta Kulange has directed the NHAI to expedite the installation of the surveillance camera on NH16.
He also said that stray cattle found on the NH would be handed over the cow-less farmers.
Kulange has also directed the police to intensify patrolling on the NH16 near Khallikote, as the highway looters prowl in the area. He also stressed for installation of the solar light system in the area.
