Berhampur, July 25 (LocalWire): A portion of one of the girls’ hostels in Berhampur University, located in Bhanja Bihar, collapsed today.

No one was hurt as almost all the students were in their classes at the time of the mishap.

University authorities shifted all the 111 students from Saberi to Chilika, a newly-constructed hostel for girls.

‘We shifted the girls immediately for their safety,’ said the registrar of the University, Ranjan Kumar Biswal.

Saberi, one of the oldest girls’ hostels of the university, mostly third and fourth semester post-graduate students.

The 30-year-old hostel might have collapsed due to the rains, he said. The registrar along with other officers, including post-graduate council chairperson and the hostel warden rushed to the building after getting information about its collapse.

A portion of one of the bathing complexes along with a 1000-litre-capacity water tank collapsed, he said.

One of the inmates who was in the hostel escaped as she had just stepped out of the building when it collapsed.

Biswal said the two-storied building was not declared unsafe by the engineers of the Road and Building department.

‘We repaired almost all hostels, including Saberi during the summer vacations.

There were no major complaints from the hostel inmates about it being unsafe,’ said hostel warden, Bhagirathi Panigrahy.
