Berhampur, Sept 4 (LocalWire): After Ramayapatna, the sea has threatened to erode the coastal town of Gopalpur-on-Sea in Ganjam district.
An under-construction toilet complex near the sea beach in the tourist resort was damaged due to erosion two days ago.
Ganjam Collector, Vijay Amruta Kulange, visited the site to take stock of the situation on Monday.
‘Since the sea is eroding the coastline of the district, we will request the government to depute an expert team to study the phenomenon,’ the Collector said.
He said he would write a letter to the government in this regard.
Some years ago, a portion of the children’s park set up by the NAC Gopalpur, near the beach, was also eroded by the sea.
The fishermen living near the beach were afraid that if the sea encroaches in such a rapid pace, Gopalpur town might be in danger.
Berhampur Development Authority (BeDA) was constructing the toilet complex near the beach for visitors with an investment of around Rs 67 lakhs.
Around 50 percent of the construction was complete when it collapsed after high tidal waves lashed at it.
‘We will stop the construction here and search for an alternative location,’ said BeDA vice chairman Chakravarti Singh Rathore.
