Berhampur, Nov 13 (LocalWire): Activists creating awareness about organ donation, hailed the state government’s decision for instituting an annual award in the name of Suraj Behera of Ganjam district whose organs were donated after he was declared brain dead in Surat.
While felicitating his parents here on Monday, the chief minister awarded them with a pucca house and Rs 5 lakh cash.
‘I think Odisha is the first state in the country which will institute such an award,’ said Nilesh Mandlewale, the founder and president of Donate Life, a Surat-based organization that coordinated and successfully motivated Suraj’s parents to donate his oragans.
‘I thank the chief minister for taking such a step that will boost organ donation and I hope other states follow suit,’ he said.
‘We hope people will take a pledge to donate their organs after the chief minister announced to set up the award,’ said J Suresh of Friends’ Helping Club, a Berhampur-based organization which creates awareness on eye donation.
The state government has amended the Odisha Anatomy Act 2011 to make donation easy.
After the amendment, at least six bodies were donated to the medical college here.
