Berhampur, August 27 (LocalWire): A group of government officials trekked for seven kilometres through hilly terrain in Ganjam district to reach two remote villages located inside the forest in Polsara block on Monday.
Led by project director, District Rural Development Agency, Sidharth Shankar Swain, they walked the muddy roads to reach Toshingi and Chanchada, the tribal villages under Pandirpda and Gochhabadi panchayats respectively.
Swain was accompanied with block development officer, Polasara, Sambhu Nath Nandi, and other officers.
‘We discussed the problems of the villagers,’ said Swain. The main demand of the villagers was construction of road and drinking water facilities, he said. ‘We assured them of constructing a road and provide drinking water facilities and solar light in the villages,’ he added.
While Toshingi has around 22 families with 90 people, Chanchada has around a dozen families with 50 people. Due to lack of pucca road, school children walk around 7 kms every day to reach school in Palaba.
Women trek 3 to 4 kms to fetch water from the open water body at Toshinga.
Though there are some other hamlets in the reserve forest, these two are the major villages in the Singhasani jungle area in the block.
The BDO said construction of two km road under Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana was being undertaken while five to six kilometer-long-road would be taken up by the MGNREGS and through the rural development department.
‘We have prepared a layout of Rs 1.60-lakh to draw water from the water body and to construct a 2000 litre water tank to supply water to every household. The open water body would be covered,’ he said.
Swain provided the work order to nine families for construction of houses in Toshingi villages under Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY) and asked to complete the houses in stipulated time period.
Villagers were happy the team visited the remote village. ‘We are happy as the officers’ team, including PD, DRDA and BDO visited the village to take stock of the situation,’ said sarapanch of Gochhabadi panchayat, Manoranjan Gouda.
