Bhubaneswar, May 1 (Local Wire): The state government has now fixed the target of procuring 3 lakh quintal of Kendu leaves by the end of May 31 from the communities dependent on the forest produce for their livelihood.
Mona Sharma, Additional Chief Secretary, Forest and Environment Department said that the government has fixed the target to be completed by May end.
She however also cautioned that the procurement also depends on productions.
Sharma said that her department has also allocated funds, to be paid as wages to the pluckers of the Kendu leaves and other workers engaged either in processing of the leaves or for those who would work with the government for forestry related works.
“We have fixed the target of procurement of 3 lakh quintals of Kendu leaves by May end.
There are around 6 lakh such pluckers engaged in the work.
We have allocated Rs 170 crore for them for wage payments,” she said.
She said that Odisha is the only state where the leaves are also processed.
The processed leaves are later used in the production of bidi, she said.
