Berhampur: Oct 19 (LocalWire) Amidst protest by some residents, Ganjam district administration today evicted a slum area comprising 30 houses at Ainabandh Sahi under Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) limits.
The constructions done illegally by encroaching the government land were razed to ground, sources said.
Meanwhile, in protests against the move, some residents had staged demonstration seeking their rehabilitation.
However, BeMC commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore said the families affected would be rehabilitated at Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY)(Urban) houses constructed at Nehru Nagar are of the city. Several of them have already got key of their house, he said.
The families, whose houses were partially damaged in the process would, however, not be rehabilitated, he said adding there was no tension in the area and the residents have since understood after being told about the alternative measure, said commissioner.
BeMC had extended the manpower and machinery support for smooth conduct of the drive undertaken by the administration, the sources said adding it was being done to make the ‘Silk City’ encroachment-free.
No untoward incident was reported during the eviction drive, said inspector in-charge, Bada Bazar police station Prasant Bhupati.
