Berhampur, April 17 (LocalWire): A hardcore Maoist leader carrying a cash reward of rupees one lakh on his head surrendered before the Kandhamal superintendent of police Pratik Singh on Tuesday.
Rakesh, alias Bharata Kanhar (21), of Barahala village in Kandhamal district was active in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Boudh and Nayagarh regions. Rakesh was wanted in several cases of murder and gunfight.
Rakesh said that he joined the outfit in March last year but he soon realised that the group was involved in the killing of innocent people and harassing poor villagers, which prompted him to surrender.
He said that he was working under the group’s dreaded Kadanga Area Committee.
As per government norms for the rehabilitation of surrendered militants, Rakesh will get monetary assistance as well as help in vocational training to start a livelihood, the officer said.
